Chapter 23

“You fucking bastard. You fucking sociopath,” Daniel yelled at his TV, taking another drink from his whiskey bottle.

He was so enraged that he came very close to throwing something at his TV and smashing it to smithereens. Although putting a fist through the stupid face of that bastard on screen might be most gratifying, he mused in his drunken state.

He was pretty close to doing something — anything — so he wouldn't have to look at his devious face anymore. The face of that monster, Michael Walker.

Leaving that courtroom and leaving Carlotta alone was one of the hardest things Daniel had ever had to do. Naturally, on his way home, he stopped at the liquor store and bought enough alcohol to keep a party going for at least a week. His troubles didn't stop there.

Ever since the case fell apart and Michael Walker was declared an innocent man, the media hype around them intensified. Carlotta was a famous model, so things just exploded. What happened in that courtroom was all the media wanted to talk about. And they all wanted his side of the story, not hers. It was disgusting.

Anything for higher ratings, he grumbled.

"You whore," he told the reporter on the screen.

All of you are just a bunch of whores.

And the lies they served to the public were appalling. The tabloids were the worst. Some even implicated him. Supposedly, according to some “sources,” Carlotta and Daniel came up with this story together so they could frame Michael, an innocent rich boy who almost fell prey to Carlotta's gold-digging intentions.

And Michael Walker was everywhere. He constantly gave interviews, appeared on this show or that, sharing his sad, completely fake story and making Daniel completely insane with rage.

Were all these people blind? How can they believe him?

"Just look at him." It was written all over his face that he was a sociopath.

And the reporter was so sympathetic toward him, felt that he had almost fallen prey to Carlotta and had his whole life destroyed because of this evil model.

It broke Daniel's heart, watching how they villainized Carlotta in public. It was like what she had been through wasn't enough. Now the whole city participated in tormenting her.

Daniel knew this was business and nothing else. Nobody cared about the truth, just about ratings, shares, or whatever they were called, so of course, they all wanted a piece of Michael Walker. Those kinds of stories sold better than Carlotta's. Daniel was disgusted. He couldn't believe people were buying into that crap, that Michael was the victim. Many suggested he should sue her in return for emotional suffering or something.

Michael brushed all of it off, playing the part of a noble goody-two-shoes, simply stating that it all had ended for the better. If Daniel was a violent man, he would track down that scumbag and deal with him once and for all.

If you're a violent man? part of him rebelled. It's in your genes, Buddy.

The absurdity of their lives didn't end there. Because wherever Michael Walker was, his mother followed closely behind.
